Assessment for Chains
How to Find an Item

What you need before you can run R3RA is an Item that reads well, has pc's interest and is worded as a somatic. Having that it will run with R3RA procedure. There will be a Chain, a Basic and a postulate at the bottom of it. It will all erase and the pc will feel better as a result.

An Original Item, "Can't walk too well" may
have many Somatics and dozens of Chains
connected with it. This is basically what you
sort out with  Pre-assessment. Then
each somatic found can be run 4 flows.

A pc, when first coming in, has broad complaints, disabilities, fears, medical conditions, etc., etc. That is of course where you start. But a broad complaint has to be narrowed down into its many components before you attempt R3RA. There can be many Engram Chains connected with a complaint such as "Can't walk too well". When all these are listed out you can handle them one by one and the broad complaint will, as a rule, be gone or at least be changed for the better. To find exactly what to run you do an Assessment. The basic terms in Engram Clearing related to assessing for items to run are:

Original Item: The Original Item is a condition, illness, accident, drug, medicine, etc., etc. that has been stated by the pc to the auditor. This will come from the Pc Info Sheet, from another Engram Clearing Rundown or may simply be offered by the pc. Original items tend to be general in character, such as "can't walk too well", "bad hearing", "afraid of speaking in public" or a medical condition. They are too broad to be audited directly. To overcome that a Pre-assessment is done on them.

Pre-assessment: Pre-assessment is done on the Original Item with the Pre-assessment List. It narrows the Original item down to different types of Somatics, such as pains, aches, mis-emotions, etc. Each reading category is then used to get pc's exact wording for each somatic.

Running Item: "A sharp pain in my left big toe".
It is a very exact somatic in pc's own
wording. It is one little piece of
the puzzle, "Can't walk too well".

Running Item: Is an item, worded by the pc, which states a somatic in a form that can be run with R3RA. This is the Running Item. Running Items are exactly stated pains, sensations, feelings, emotions, etc. Examples: "feeling scared," "an ache in my hip", "a sharp pain in my left big toe". These you can run out with R3RA.
The auditor uses each reading Pre-assessment Item to get a list of Somatics from pc. Auditor asks, "What (general type of somatic, such as "pains") are connected with ("can't walk too well")?" The auditor writes down exactly what the pc says and notes the instant Meter reads. The final list is called the "Running Item list". These items will run and erase with R3RA.

As you can see, there are steps to this. You narrow it down to a runnable thing, a Running Item. Now you are ready for business with Engram Running by Chains, R3RA.

In Engram Clearing you use, among other things, the Pc Info Sheet to get an overview of pc's complaints, a list of Original Items. It contains the pc's physical history and background, and gives the auditor and C/S a picture of the case. It is an assessment as it is done on the Meter and enables the auditor and C/S to see what needs to be handled.

The Original Item, to repeat, is a condition, illness, accident, drug, alcohol or medicine, etc. that has been stated by the pc to the auditor. This will come from the Pc Info Sheet, from another Engram Clearing Rundown or may simply be offered by the pc. Original items tend to be general in character, such as "can't walk too well", "Problems with algebra", "Troubles at work", or a medical condition. It is rarely expressed as a specific somatic and is thus too broad to be audited on R3RA. What really leads to Chains, that go way back and to a Basic, are the Somatics of the types listed on Pre-assessment. But you are handling the pc and his complaints. So you simply use the Pc Info Sheet to get such a list of complaints that bothers the pc.

Pre-assessment
Having a complaint the pc wants handled you therefore have to do a Pre-assessment on it. It is done with a prepared Pre-assessment List and it sorts out what categories of Somatics are connected to the Original Item, and which one of these are the most highly charged. It is called the Pre-assessment because it comes before the assessment of the actual item to run out, R3RA.

The Pre-assessment List  is a prepared list. The list includes: pains, sensations, feelings, emotions, attitudes, misemotions, unconsciousnesses, sorenesses, compulsions, fears, aches, tirednesses, pressures, discomforts, dislikes, numbnesses.

Pre-assessment Item.
From assessing the Pre-assessment you get a number of reading lines. The largest reading item is the Pre-assessment Item. This item is used to get the specific Running Items.

Finding the Running Item
The auditor takes the Pre-assessment Item and he now makes a list on a separate sheet of paper.  He asks the pc, "What (Pre-assessment Item found) are/is connected with (Original Item found)?"
Example: "What pains are connected with 'Can't walk too well'?"

The auditor writes down exactly what the pc says, one item under the other. He notes the Meter reads at the exact moment the pc ends the statement of the Running Item. That is the valid instant read. Now the auditor has a list, a so-called "Running Item list."

If the pc has given you an exact feeling ("feeling scared," "an ache in my hip," "a sharp pain in my toe") the feeling is simply run out R3RA Quad if it reads and the pc is interested.

Running Item: The auditor takes the best reading item on the Running Item list  and checks with the pc, "Are you interested in this item?" Pc interest is checked as part of the assessment (except for drugs). So if it reads well and has pc's interest you simply run it with R3RA Quad.

Running Items are sometimes expressed by the pc out of the blue. You have to be ready for that and note them with instant read. If the item originated is within one of the categories of the Pre-assessment list they can be run, and should be, at the right point. Make sure, however, that you handle one Original Item at the time. If the originated item is unrelated to that you still clearly note it and let the pc understand that it will be looked into as a Running Item. (This is TR4, but you do check and run that item later). When handling one Original Item you have to be careful to stay on the subject but at the same time make pc feel assured and confident about that his originated items will be fully looked into.

All this assessment is leading up to one thing: finding Running Items that will run and resolve the case. So the thing you are after in assessment are the Running Items. This is done by taking the Original Item, such as "can't walk too well" or "taking headache pills" or "stomach problems" and do a Pre-assessment on it; once you have the Pre-assessment Item you find the exact  Running Item, which is always in pc's wording.

Example: "Can't walk too well" is the Original Item. A Pre-assessment is done and "sorenesses" is the largest reading item on the Pre-assessment List. The auditor then lists for Running Items, using sorenesses, and gets "A dull soreness on my left thigh." This is the Running Item, which can be handled with R3RA Quad.

Pre-assessment by Steps
This is how it is done:

1. The auditor gets an Original Item from the pc. This will be from a drug list, the Pc Info Sheet or other Engram Clearing Rundown. (It will be a drug, a condition, an illness, an accident, etc.)
2. He then Pre-assesses the Somatics on the Pre-assessment List to find out which Pre-assessment Item is the most highly charged in connection with the Original Item.
3. From the Pre-assessment Item (the largest reading Pre-assessment List item) the auditor can get specific Somatics (the Running Items) from the pc. The auditor picks the Running Item with the largest read and makes sure the pc is interested in getting it handled.
4. The Running Item found in Step 3 is run R3RA Quad.

Example: Female pc. The Original Item is "monthly period". The auditor assesses the Pre-assessment List below by asking the pc:

"Are___ connected with monthly period?"
pains
compulsions
sensations
fears
feelings
aches
emotions
tirednesses
attitudes
pressures
misemotions
discomforts
unconsciousnesses
dislikes
sorenesses
numbnesses

He gets an LF on misemotions. This is the largest read.
He takes a separate sheet of paper (for Running Items) and asks:
"What misemotions are connected with monthly period?"

As the pc tells him, the auditor notes each down on his Running Items List, noting Meter reads while the pc is giving the items.

Pre-assessment Item - Example
On the Pre-assessment List you start from largest read and then take up the lesser reading items from the same list.
From the Pre-assessment Item the auditor can make a list and find the Running Items.
Let's say the Pre-assessment Item is "misemotion." The auditor asks, "What misemotions are connected with monthly period?" He writes down all the answers the pc gives him, with their reads:

Pc: Jane M                      Date xx/xx/xx

Mismeotions -Monthly Period

Feeling like I want to give up          X
Worried about sex                            LFBD
Feeling angry about my condition F
Scared to death                                 sF
"that's all"

The Running Items list.
Auditor notes pc's
   exact wording and read,
when pc says it.
It's done on a separate
piece of paper.

Feeling like I want to give up X
Worried about sex LFBD
Feeling angry about my condition F
Scared to death sF

The auditor would first run "worried about sex" R3RA Quad and then would return to the next best reading item, in this case, "Feeling angry about my condition."

The auditor chooses the largest reading item the pc has given and checks interest: "Are you interested in (Item)?". If pc is interested, this is the Running Item.
Having found the Running Item the auditor then runs it out R3RA Quad. A flow has to read per Clearing Commands to be run.

The Next Running Item
Having completed the R3RA Quad on the previous Running Item the auditor has to find the next somatic to run. He has a choice of taking a lesser reading item from the Pre-assessment List or from the Running Item list. But he can also do a new Pre-assessment on the same Original Item. This last is the safest way to go. A fresh assessment gives something that is really ready to be run. The auditor keeps working on all angles of an Original Item until it is completely handled.
Having done a Pre-assessment on the same Original Item you do a new Running Item list, take the best read and use it as your new Running Item. Eventually all reading Running Items will be checked for charge and interest as you have to F/N all reading Items.

Assessment Commands

Commands for the Pc Info Sheet of the Engram Clearing Rundown:

 1) Ask the question on the Original Assessment Sheet. Write answer and note Meter read.
 2) "Are (Pre-assessment Item being called) connected with (Original Item being preassessed)? "
 3) "What (largest reading Pre-assessment Item) are connected with (Original Item)?"
 4) "Are you interested in running (largest reading or instantly F/Ning Running Item found in 3 above)?"
 5) Go straight into R3RA Quad, using the item in 4 if the pc is interested.

Somatics are types of physical
awarenesses surrounding the body.
   These include emotions. Non-
survival Somatics can be traced
back in time on engramic Chains.
"A thetan's biggest problem is his body"

Somatics

What you can handle with R3RA are Somatics. Somatics are a lot of things.
The Pre-assessment List is designed to sort it out. The Running Item List gives you pc's exact wording. You locate Somatics which then can be handled with R3RA.

There are a thousand different descriptive words covering Somatics. A somatic are a feeling of pain, aches, dizziness, sadness, they are all feelings, sensations, etc. These are types of physical awarenesses. All Chains are held together by the general types of awarenesses which are named on the Pre-assessment List. The pc's own wording is how he or she identifies and labels that specific somatic and type of awareness.

These Somatics are what hold the long and important Chains on a case together. The body condition or Somatics are what glue the incidents together. A thetan's biggest problem is his body; that is his constant worry and problem. Thus the body and its parts are the restimulators and common denominator for most of the important Chains. Even misemotions are body-related. Emotions and misemotions on the tone scale 0-4 have clear relation to the body. They have physiological characteristics.  Key emotions starts endocrine processes which in turn controls to the body. 'Fear' is a command "Get your body away from here!" Strong fear even has a body smell to it, stemming from body chemistry and 'chemical commands' to alert the body. Best known may be anger and its relation to adrenalin.  Adrenalin gets pumped into the blood stream as a chemical command to be aggressive and be ready for attack. Any Engram has tone levels associated to it. The tone or tones are recorded in the Engram and restimulation can trigger the body response of that tone. If a situation was dangerous, but manageable, this may be anger. If the situation was 'too dangerous' it may be fear; better just to remove the body. 'Pretended death' is around 0 on the tone scale and is a well known tactic in the animal kingdom of prey and predators. Some prey animals are trying to avoid capture by playing dead and the fate of having its body end up as a meal. So misemotions in the band 0-2.0 are clearly body related; they have a body response associated to them. (See also the definition of  emotions under "The Tone Scale" of CT-0).

One general difficulty given by the pc as the Original Item is typically composed of pains, sensations, feelings, emotions, attitudes, misemotions, unconsciousnesses, sorenesses, compulsions, fears, aches, tirednesses, pressures, discomforts, dislikes and numbnesses as well as postulates. It is very possible that any major Original Item contains 3 or 4 full Chains for each one of these. There are 16 named categories on the Pre-assessment List. With 4 Chains for each type of somatic it would make up 64 Running Items related to one Original Item. So the auditor has his work cut out for him; better yet, the Original Item will sooner or later "give in" confronted with such an arsenal of weapons. What can seem an endless task such as 64 running items on 4 flows (a total of 256 Chains) often gets sorted out much quicker than a calculation would tell you. In all this there usually are just a handful of real important basic incidents. Once they are erased the situation and Original Item are resolved. But you have the full arsenal and should not compromise or quickie it. The auditor simply keeps going in a systematic fashion.

"Being scared by the Devil as a kid"
is a Narrative incident. There is only
one such incident in pc's past.
Had the item been "Being scared" it
would of course be a normal Running
Item (somatic) as many incidents
could have been found in pc's past.

Narrative Handling
A narrative is a story. It refers to one specific incident to start out with. Running Narrative Incidents take a long time. You don't try to solve a whole case this way as it would take thousands of hours. To abandon narratives totally, on the other hand, would be to abandon some of the most dramatic case changes available.

Today Narrative running is used to handle physically or emotionally painful experiences; such as an accident, illness, loss or great emotional stress. Running these incidents out Narrative erases the psychic trauma the person has had and the pc will as a result recover quite rapidly.

You sometimes find that a person's whole life changed around the death of a relative or child or a divorce or an auto accident or some other similar disaster. This is usually found and handled in Step Nine in the Engram Clearing Full Program Outline.

When running a Narrative, one is running out that specific  incident. A Narrative needs to be run and run and run on that one incident. You are running that incident to erasure and you only go earlier similar if it starts to grind and no change is apparent. The trick in running narratives is to find the earlier beginning each time the person is moved through it.

When running a Narrative Item, the auditor first finds out exactly what happened to the pc. then he asks the pc "What shall we call this incident?" He gets preclear's wording and can now run it using the Engram Running Narrative Commands. But as any Engram Item, you only run it if it reads well and the pc is interested in running it.

Narrative handling to its full EP can give miraculous results, but it can take a long time to get the pc through it. A full Engram running EP of postulate off (which is the erasure), F/N and VGIs must be reached. If the pc gives a cognition which is not the actual postulate from the incident or doesn't sound like it to the auditor, the postulate is asked for by, "Did you make a postulate at the time of the incident?"

Narrative Assessment

1) Ask the questions called for on the Pc Info Sheet.
2) Note any Original Items that contain recent losses, illnesses, accidents, upsets or deaths.
3) Have pc briefly state what happened (noting instant read when first stated).
4) Ask: "Are you interested in handling (description of item on the Pc Info Sheet)?"
5) If the pc says that he is, ask: "What shall we call this incident?" You get it named so you can put it in the commands.
6) Now run this incident per R3RA Narrative.

Assessment and Tone of Voice

The auditor does the assessing by asking the question as a question, not as a statement of fact.

As a drill you should go around and ask questions, recording it on a tape recorder. You will notice, when listening to this, that the voice tone rises on a question and goes down on a statement. So the right way to assess the questions is to have a higher pitch at the end. To assess the question as a statement tends to evaluate and can even invalidate the preclear.

Assessment is between the Meter and the pc's Bank. There is no need for the auditor to look at the pc in assessing. The auditor asks the assessment question and notes which item has the longest Fall, Blowdown or Instant F/N. He has to look at the Meter as not to miss any Instant reaction.

Assessing is not a rote procedure. The auditor has to be on the ball and see the reads when they first occur. If the pc gives a list and the auditor doesn't watch the reads and note them down, then the auditor has to go back to assess the list. By that time the surface charge is gone. He should have watched the Meter in the first place and taken reads while the pc was originating the item. Try to avoid to have to assess finished lists. Of course, when the auditor has a list already done by another auditor and no reads marked, he will have to read it off and mark what reads. And using a list a second time auditor has to read it to the pc to see what reads.

F/N means Key-out. Something
just keyed out. In R3RA we use
an Instant F/N as a read, because
we want to erase permanently
whatever just keyed out.

Instant F/Ns
An instant F/N is an F/N which occurs instantly at the end of the major thought voiced by the auditor or at the end of the major thought voiced by the pc. It is often seen as a LFBD-F/N or a LF-F/N. It means "key-out". There was charge there and now it is gone. It means there was force connected with that significance which is available to the pc to view and run. The item is real to the pc. You don't use that on the Grades 0-4 (where you go for Key-out), but you use it in Engram Running where you go for Erasure. You will find that an F/N taken up again, will immediately key-in but this is what the Engram Clearing auditor wants. He can now take the Chain to Erasure.

In Engram Running one always handles an instant F/N first, then any LFBD, LF, F or sF, in that order. The largest reading items are the ones the pc can best confront. When the largest reading item is handled go on to the next biggest read, and so on, until all reading items have been handled. This same principle applies to all Engram Clearing auditing. Take up the biggest reading areas and handle those first.

You may find there is something obvious wrong with the pc, like a broken arm in a sling, yet it may not read at all. Instead the Meter is reading on the pain in his leg. You do the standard action of handling the items that the Meter reads on.

In assessing a prepared list in Engram Clearing, such as the Pre-assessment List, always take up the instant F/N first; then by largest read, BD, LF, F, sF.

In a list like the Running Items list you continue to ask and list until the pc says that's all or you've got an F/N item. If you get in trouble right after listing a Running Item list on a pc and the pc seems upset and you are not a CT-3 auditor, go and get a CT-3 auditor fast and have him repair the list for you, as it may have become an L&N list either through auditor error or inability to read a Meter or missing a read or whatever. The laws of listing and nulling can, if action get messed up, in rare instances apply to a Engram Assessment lists. If they did, it means trouble.

Listing for a Running Item on the Running Item list usually doesn't cause trouble.

This and a failure to follow Engram Clearing assessment and R3RA procedure exactly or failure to actually erase the basic on a Chain is about all the trouble you can run into.
